CUMI – TRN: 001-530-585
Because of a lack of intermediate term care facilities in Western Jamaica, fully rehabilitated
ex-street persons who have no home placement in the community are given the option to use the Day Centre and Night Shelter services while attending work, and seeking independent housing solutions.
In 1995 CUMI commenced the CUMI/JMMB Children’s Programme, with the support of Jamaica Money Market Broker’s (JMMB). The services targeted children who were abandoned as a result of parent(s) afflicted with mental illness and were unable to provide care and protection.
All the children involved benefitted from the wholistic method of parenting, with the therapeutic support.
In 2008 the Children’s Programme and JMMB, established a partnership, for the period of one year, with the local Cornialdi Primary School, providing an educational programme of intervention, including psychological assessments and the environment to improve behaviour and learning. The programme was a success and information forwarded to the Ministry of Education.
A special thank you letter was sent to JMMB for the partnership which provided the Children’s Programme with the financial support from 1995 – 2012.
These children achieved successes in passing GSAT, CAPE and other high school examinations, with 1 student graduating at the university level (Edna Manley College of the Visual & Performing Arts) with 2 special, prestigious honours with her degree.
These days, CUMI provides only limited support and makes referral cases to the Office of the Child Development Agency (CDA).
Thanks to the sponsors, Jamaica Money Market Brokers (JMMB) and supporters such as the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) also the willing staff and professionals.
